What can YOU do if a natural disaster strikes while on holiday?
When we daydream about holidays, we tend to picture beers on the beach or lolling on a sun lounger – not of surviving a natural disaster. Since the violent 6.6 magnitude earthquake that hit the holiday hotspots of Bodrum in Turkey and Kos in Greece on 20th July, there have reportedly been 20 earthquakes in the triangular area between Datca, Bodrum and Kos.
The latest quake to hit Bodrum at the beginning of August reached a magnitude 5.3 on the Richter scale and comes just days after the last quake hit the Turkish town.
July’s earthquake saw popular resorts suffer collapsed buildings and flooding due to a tsunami that followed the initial shock. Over 120 people were injured as they tried to flee their hotels – including Thomson, Thomas Cook and First Choice passengers – and tragically, two people lost their lives. Tens of thousands were said to have spent the following nights outdoors, out of fear for what the aftershocks might do to the remains of their hotels.
So what can you do if it happens to YOU?
Travellers should check the small print of their holiday packages before they fly to find out what protection they have, or contact their holiday provider to find out more. Then, having found the discrepancies in their coverage, they should find a holiday insurance plan that suits them.
ATOL doesn’t protect travellers from natural disasters and it is not guaranteed that the holiday companies will cover your losses. Moreover, having medical insurance is essential for any journey, but doubly so when travelling to countries more prone to natural disasters like earthquakes.
No one can predict natural disasters, or in fact any type of trouble on holiday, so it pays to be prepared. It is advisable for any travellers to check with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) before their trip to get the most up-to-date information about the country they’re visiting, especially if it’s just suffered a natural disaster like the ones we’ve seen of late. We’ve got more advice on what to do should things go wrong while you’re away, here.
