5 Top Value European Escapes For 2015

Travellers across the globe have long been seduced by the siren song of Europe... and it's not hard to see why. Golden ribbons of coastline, spectacular landscapes, architectural treasures and an enchanting mix of cultural and culinary delights have charmed holiday-makers for many years.

However, sometimes it makes sense to explore a little off the beaten track and away from some of the most popular destinations in order to get the most for your money. Read on to discover some of the best value holiday hotspots tipped to top the travel lists in 2015...

1. Romania

If breathtaking scenery made up of rolling hills, dramatic mountains, wild horses and fairytale villages sounds like heaven to you, then book a ticket to Romania. Made famous by Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula, the imposing castles and medieval monasteries scattered throughout this charming rural landscape, make it easy to pretend you've stepped straight into a gothic masterpiece. Welcoming locals, the intricate waterways of the Danube Delta and affordable skiing opportunities up in those snow-capped Carpathian Mountains are draws to this Eastern European country.

2. Portugal

Although growing in popularity, Portugal still hasn't quite reached the bustling crowds of some of Europe's best-loved sunspots. But things are set to change now that budget airlines are setting up flights straight into the country's capital and it's not hard to see why. The glorious beaches of the Algarve offer great value and Lisbon, with its cobbled streets and lively nightlife, is set to give Barcelona a run for its money.

3. Bosnia and Herzegovina

Not necessarily a region you might associate with holidays due to the conflict that affected this area during the 90s, Bosnia and Herzegovina are now rising stars on the travel circuit. Awesome mountain peaks, hills dotted with sheep, and lush, river valleys surround the main towns with Sarajevo being a charming and cosmopolitan city of cobbled streets, buzzing cafe culture and Turkish style markets. To the south, the climate has a balmy Mediterranean feel and a must-see is the famous Ottoman bridge at Mostar, a symbol of new beginnings and hope.

4. Croatia

Steadily climbing in popularity over the past few years, Croatia is definitely worth considering adding to your to-do list. The famous Dalmatian Coast is decorated with stunning coastlines leading to deep, azure waters, scattered with islands – just the place to hire a yacht or take a boat trip. Dubrovnik is a snapshot of days gone by with quaint buildings and a medieval wall – the city has featured heavily in TV show Game of Thrones – and the Croatian people are known for their warmth and sense of humour.

5. Turkey

Turkey is a country steeped in history, tempting travellers with a diverse landscape and sense of the exotic East. Decadent palaces, bustling bazaars, towering mountains and the postcard-perfect beaches of the Turquoise coast – Turkey has a lot to offer visitors. A particular draw is the cuisine with sociable mezzes, spicy kebabs and delicious dessert, baklava, all widely available for affordable prices.
