Top Five Driving Holidays For The Over 50's

MTC Over 50's Driving Holiday

One of the greatest pleasures about travelling is the sense of freedom it can offer – an escape from the routine and responsibilities of everyday life. For many of us this might consist of a carefully chosen destination, complete with a bit of sight-seeing and a comfortable hotel. For others, however, a road trip is the only way to truly see the world.

If you’ve ever dreamt of loading up the car or camper van and embarking on a driving holiday, here are a few of our favourite road trip destinations to ignite your inspiration…

1. Great Ocean Road, Australia

If you do love to be beside the seaside then set off Down Under to the Great Ocean Road. Just outside the vibrant and culturally diverse city of Melbourne, this 300km route winds its way along Australia’s spectacular southern coast. Expect jaw-dropping views of verdant cliffs, sparkling seas and that endless blue horizon stretching into the distance. From the surfer’s paradise of Torquay to the rainforests of Otway Park, the Great Ocean Road is the drive of a lifetime – bump it up the bucket list.

2. The Amalfi Coast, Italy

For a European driving holiday soaked in sunshine, style and sophistication, Italy’s Amalfi Coast ticks all the boxes. With postcard-perfect pastel houses, terraced hillsides and deliciously dazzling waters, there’s a magnificent photo opportunity around every bend in the road. Kick off your journey at the southern end of the Sorrento Peninsula and travel through the picturesque towns of Ravelo, Positano and Amalfi itself, following in the footsteps of the artists, writers and musicians that have gained inspiration from this beautiful part of the world.

3. The French Riviera, France

Another glamorous European road trip can be enjoyed in the south of France where the coastal towns of the Côte d’Azur offer beautiful beaches, historic ruins and a selection of exceptional art galleries that will please any culture vulture immensely. Fly into Nice where cheap car hire can be easily arranged, before hitting the road for St. Tropez where you can top up your tan. Don your best attire to take a turn around the millionaire’s playground of Monaco or drop in on the famous Cannes film festival to see if you can spot some stars – all the while munching fresh seafood and rustic French cuisine along the way.

4. Pacific Coast Highway, California

Experience just a taste of the USA and drive the Pacific Coast Highway where the sights, sounds and ambience of beautiful California await. Your journey starts in Los Angeles, the star-studded City of Angels, before taking you north where you’ll pass through some of the most vibrant beach destinations the country has to offer. Nature lovers will rejoice as they enter Big Sur country where dramatic cliff drops offer stunning views that stretch all the way to San Francisco Bay, and the landscape is dotted with wineries and mighty redwood forests. This route may offer just a snapshot of this enormous country, but it’s one of the best to enjoy by road.

5. The Rhine Valley, Germany

Discover the glorious Rhine Valley, one of the most scenic countryside drives in Europe, and marvel at the medieval castles and rich colours that unfurl before you. You’ll feel you have taken a step back in time, or at least into a JRR Tolkien novel; the imposing castle at Lorelei is thought to have inspired the famous author’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. If idyllic villages, Gothic church steeples and steep fields of wine-producing grapes sounds like a landscape from holiday heaven, driving the Rhine Valley might just be the road trip of your dreams.
