Why Adventure Holidays For The Over-50s Are All The Range

The past decade has seen a steady rise in the popularity of adventure travel amongst the over-50s. Research, commissioned last year by Saga, found that travellers over the age of 50 were increasingly expanding their travel horizons with a third (34%) stating they chose to travel to more exotic destinations than they did 10 years ago. It was also found that the over-50s demographic makes up more than 50% of the UK’s spend on travel and tourism, proving that the older generations are whole-heartedly embracing their inner wanderlust, and showing no signs of slowing down.

However, it isn’t just the frequency and the choice of destination that are changing for the over-50s crowd; the types of holidays they are choosing to book have also undergone a makeover. These days, the notion that anyone over the age of 50 could only be interested in a cruise or a relaxing beach break is quite simply tired and outdated. Instead, adventure travel for the over-50s is now all the rage. Who wants just sea, sun and sand when there are mountain hikes, wildlife treks, cultural tours and biking expeditions to choose from? Medical Travel Compared recommend trying ElderTreks for the over 50's adventurer.

But why are adventure holidays for the older generations taking off in such a big way?

Last year, Business Destinations reported that this shift in attitudes towards travel is part of an overall trend where consumers are moving away from prizing material possessions above all else and instead, focusing their attentions on experiences. Additionally, the widespread use of social media as well as the popularity of travel documentaries and guides such as Lonely Planet, has made the world seem like a much more accessible and far less intimidating place. Travellers can practically sample a little of a destination before they even arrive in their country of choice.

Many travellers over the age of 50 may have more time to travel due to families growing up and flying the nest or the fact they have retired from work. Many have also paid off mortgages – another factor that results in a little extra money to burn. So, if there is an experience you’ve always dreamed of or an activity you’ve always wanted to try – this part of your life could be the ideal time to give it a go!

Adventure Holiday Ideas

Trekking Holidays

If you thrive on being in the Great Outdoors and are on close, personal terms with good old Mother Nature, consider a trekking holiday for your next trip. A ramble across Exmoor might be good fun, but the world is a big place and there are some breathtaking trekking destinations out there, just begging to be conquered.

If you have a few weeks to spare, why not head to Nepal to tackle the base of Everest or Annapurna trek? If time is a little tighter and you’re of a reasonable level of fitness, try the historic Inca Trail of Peru, wending its way through the ancient runs of the Lost City of Macchu Picchu. Prefer to be a little closer to home? Majorca’s Serra de Tramuntan has some wonderful trekking options with enchanting coastal views whilst the Vikos Gorge in Greece offers an eight-hour venture through the deepest gorge in Europe.

Sailing Holidays

For some, there is no better feeling than being out on the water, the wind in your hair and the sound of the waves lulling you into a blissful state, far from any of the cares and responsibilities of the real world back home.

Sailing holidays in beautiful Croatia have grown increasingly popular in recent years thanks to the stunning rugged islands that pepper the Dalmation Coast, the crystalline colours of the stunning Adriatic Sea and the numerous towns and fishing villages that make for picturesque stop-of points.

Safari Holidays

Experience the magic of Africa with a safari into one of its great National Parks. Whether you choose a classic overland trip in Kenya or explore the waterways of Botswana by boat, nothing will beat seeing some of the most exciting wildlife to be found on earth in their natural habitat. As well as the big five – lions, elephants, buffalos, rhinoceros and leopards – you might spot cheetahs, wild dogs, hippos and so much more.

Why not take your adventure one step further and stay in a tented lodge under the endless starry skies?

Whichever adventure you choose, be sure to remember to book the right travel cover so that you are sufficiently protected for your trip. The type of activities as well as any existing medical conditions you may have, could affect the type of cover you will need.
