Do you feel confident driving abroad?

Holidays, be they short city breaks or longer vacations, are supposed to be a time to relax and recharge our batteries. So what about transportation when you’re away? Is hiring a car a holiday must-have or does the thought of getting behind the wheel abroad fill you with dread? If so, you’re not alone.

New research has revealed that, despite enjoying trips overseas, nearly a fifth (19%) of British motorists are too anxious to get behind the wheel while they’re in a foreign country, The Sun reported.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given that most countries drive on the opposite side of the road to us, almost two thirds (63%) feel less confident driving abroad than they do on roads back home. Due to this, the majority of drivers are concerned about how unfamiliar it is, while 46% are worried that they will unknowingly break a driving law, and 38% are wary of scuffing or denting their rental car.

Despite this, many holidaymakers take the opportunity to reap the rewards of hiring a vehicle. The biggest benefit of renting a car is that it provides you with the freedom to travel anywhere you want and a quarter enjoy the novelty of trying out new vehicles. Half believe it provides you with the opportunity to see more natural landscape and over a third (36%) are glad to avoid trying to understand different public transport systems.

While more than half (56%) of drivers seek the most cost-effective vehicle, one in 10 treat themselves to a nicer car than they have at home, and 13% opt for the safest model.

The main countries Brits feel nervous about driving in are:

  • China
  • Thailand
  • Mexico
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Russia
  • Vietnam
  • Colombia
  • Turkey
  • Hong Kong
  • Ecuador El Salvador
  • Brazil
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Guatemala
  • Honduras
  • Italy
  • Chile
  • Turkey
  • Korea
  • Malaysia
  • Argentina

Before you travel it’s worth taking a look at the Government’s website to double check information about driving licenses and what you need to carry with you in the vehicle. Rules on this vary from country to country.

Whether you plan to spend your days sunning yourself by the pool or whizzing off in your hire car on daily adventures, you need to make sure you have the right travel insurance policy.
