European city swaps that will save you £££s
With mainland Europe just on our doorstep, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to holiday destinations.
Its close proximity means that many of us pop over to the continent for city breaks, but it’s safe to say that we tend to head to the same old hotspots. Now, Europe’s most popular cities have become victims of their own success, and tourists are starting to look for quieter and cheaper alternatives.
New research discussed by the Telegraph found that Europe’s “unsung” cities are great for avoiding the crowds and can cost under half the price of the top destinations.
The survey investigated the cost of a basket of 12 tourist commodities. This included the cost of beer, wine, coffee, and Coca-Cola or Pepsi, a three-course evening meal, a travel card, two nights’ accommodation in a three-star hotel, airport transfers, and entry to the city’s top heritage attraction, museum, and art gallery.
A total of 36 cities were included in the research. Serbia’s capital Belgrade came out as the cheapest, with the basket of commodities costing just £148.70 for a weekend break. Meanwhile, Venice was the most expensive, setting tourists back £460.28.
If you fancy tapping into your adventurous side, consider adding these destinations to your alternative bucket list!
Swap Venice for Verona
According to the research, Verona is 36% cheaper than the floating city. Just like Venice, Verona is steeped in culture and history. Being the city of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, this medieval town provides the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway.
Swap Paris for Toulouse
The French and foreign tourists alike are turning their attention to the country’s fourth largest city. Known as “La Ville Rose” (The Pink City), Toulouse charms with its vibrant atmosphere, terracotta architecture, and two Unesco heritage sites.
And Toulouse is benefiting from better transport links. There are now more regular flights from the UK to Toulouse airport and a new high-speed TGV line was added between Paris and Bordeaux, according to The Local France.
Swap Barcelona for Valencia
Situated on the southeastern coast of Spain is the vibrant city of Valencia. It provides holiday makers with culture, arts, futuristic structures, beaches, and Albufera Park. To top it all off, Valencia has a great food scene, so you can recuperate your energy after all that walking!
Swap Lisbon for Porto
Based on the survey, Portugal’s second city of Porto is a third cheaper than Lisbon (£183.74 compared to £274.96). As well as its picturesque old town, Porto is famous for its port wine, which you can enjoy on a vineyard tour or in one of the city’s many wine bars.
Swap Berlin for Hamburg
Berlin has a reputation for being a cool city, but Hamburg looks set to be on its way to steal the capital’s crown. This maritime city was historically dubbed ‘The gateway to the world’ and the port and the history continue to echo throughout the city.
