Travel Insurance Cover, What Are The Options?

Travel Insurance Cover, What Are The Options?

Buying the right travel insurance cover is not just a case of entering your name, address and travel dates - there are other things to consider. For example, do you have a pre existing medical condition to declare? Do you want travel insurance cover for a single trip or would an annual policy be more suitable?
Each travel insurance provider is different, but the basics are the same.

Travel insurance with medical screening

If you have a pre existing medical condition, you must declare it when you buy your travel insurance policy. Your travel insurance may become invalid if you fall ill abroad as a result of your condition if you do not declare it when you buy.
When you purchase your travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions policy, you will need to be medically screened to determine the severity of your condition. You will be asked a series of questions about your condition, which may seem personal, but they are necessary to provide the right level of travel insurance cover to suit your condition.
Medical screening assesses the level of risk that your pre existing medical condition poses. Travel insurance cover for high risk conditions costs a bit more than standard policies, but some conditions won't incur any extra charge. Conditions that don't incur an extra charge will still need to be declared though.

Single trip or annual travel insurance cover?

If you are taking a one off trip this year, then a single trip travel insurance policy is all that you'll need. Single trip policies cover one off trips and there is a limit to their duration. Single trip durations vary across different providers. Some impose a limit of three months while others can cover single trips up to a year in length.
On the other hand, you might be the type of person to take several trips abroad over the course of a year, in which case an annual policy might be a more suitable option. Annual travel insurance policies can be more cost effective as they will cover an unlimited amount of trips, usually lasting between 30 and 45 days each. Check the policy wording with your chosen provider to find out the exact allowance.

Winter sports travel insurance cover

If you are going skiing, snowboarding or taking part in hazardous activities abroad, you will need to extend your travel insurance cover to include them.

Cruise travel insurance cover

If you are taking a cruise, you will need to add cruise cover extension to your travel insurance policy. If you fall ill on a cruise and you need to be airlifted to hospital, this can be a great expense which is why you need to ensure it is covered on your policy.
